Industry Need

The biopharmaceutical industry faces a growing demand for skilled biomanufacturing technicians as companies expand production capacity to meet global needs for biologics and advanced therapies. Traditional talent pipelines have not kept pace, and many entry-level roles remain unfilled, creating a bottleneck that threatens operational efficiency and product delivery. This shortage is compounded by the fact that most candidates lack hands-on experience with core biomanufacturing processes and GMP practices, making it difficult for employers to onboard and retain talent quickly.

To address this gap, the industry needs structured, work-based learning models—such as registered apprenticeships—that combine accelerated classroom instruction with on-the-job training. These programs provide a practical, scalable solution to develop technical skills, ensure compliance readiness, and create pathways for individuals from nontraditional backgrounds to enter high-growth biomanufacturing careers. Building a sustainable apprenticeship framework is essential for strengthening workforce pipelines, reducing turnover, and supporting the industry’s ability to deliver life-saving therapies at scale.

Approach

The Biomanufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Program will offer free training to qualified applicants in the greater Boston, Massachusetts area in a Life Sciences Apprenticeship Program. Grant funds will be used to expand the Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Program from its pilot phase and support 3-4 cohorts of apprentices (40-60 individuals) over an 18-month period.

The program offers:

  • Broad-based outreach to recruit new candidates into the industry
  • Intensive, streamlined technical training
  • Paid on-the-job training
  • Mentorship
  • Other ongoing support

The program is supported by multiple employers committed to supporting training, providing robust, on-the-job apprenticeships, and hiring apprentices.

Impacts

Expand access to biomanufacturing careers by providing accelerated technical training and structured on-the-job experience, creating new pathways into a high-growth industry.

Strengthen employer talent pipelines through partnerships with leading life sciences companies, ensuring a steady flow of skilled biomanufacturing technicians prepared to meet evolving industry demands.

Build a sustainable apprenticeship model that incorporates stakeholder engagement, mentorship networks, and curriculum updates to align with future technologies and regulatory requirements, supporting long-term workforce development.

Value Statement/Outcomes

The expansion of the Biomanufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Program is a transformative initiative that will provide biopharmaceutical companies with a new, diverse talent pool, fostering workforce growth and diversification. By focusing on recruiting work-ready adults with transferrable skills and a passion for life sciences, the program ensures a steady stream of motivated candidates.

Industry employers play a crucial role as partners, having the final say on apprentice admissions, ensuring that the selected candidates meet their specific needs. MassBioEd's rigorous recruitment and vetting process presents employers with a refined group of semi-finalists, streamlining the selection process. Employers also contribute to curriculum design, ensuring that apprentices receive training tailored to current industry demands. This collaboration with educational partners results in a real-time, industry-approved curriculum, preparing apprentices for immediate employment and providing employers with access to well-trained, vetted workers.

Outputs/Deliverables

Delivered accelerated classroom training (15 weeks) in math, biology, chemistry, microbiology, and hands-on lab skills to 32 career changers preparing for biomanufacturing technician roles.

Achieved 84% retention rate (27 apprentices remain with original employers), with all receiving pay increases and some earning promotions.

Placed apprentices in on-the-job training (OJT) with leading life sciences employers, including Pfizer, Thermo Fisher, MIT Lincoln Labs, AbbVie, and Bristol Myers Squibb.

Established sustainability measures, including ongoing stakeholder engagement, steering committees, mentorship networks, and plans for curriculum updates aligned with industry needs.
