Industry Need

The Biopharmaceutical industry is experiencing a major workforce gap. It is difficult to find entry level candidates who are qualified and knowledgeable in this field. Moreover, the available pipeline of workers has historically been underrepresented with racial and ethnic minorities.

Approach

This project establishes the WorDE Institute that will support the on-site development of Biopharmaceutical Workforce, Outreach, Research, Diversity, & Education. The overall goal of this program is to prepare the next-generation of diverse and knowledgeable biopharmaceutical workers through curricular as well as hands-on resources and tools.

Impacts

Expanded biopharmaceutical training capacity by creating new curriculum and renovating facilities with advanced equipment, enabling hands-on learning aligned with industry standards

Increased diversity and workforce engagement by attracting interest from over 10 additional students—primarily women and minorities, and providing exposure to biopharma careers through pilot programs and internships.

Strengthened academic-industry partnerships through collaboration with Merck and Montgomery County Community College, resulting in faculty development workshops, shared resources, and internship opportunities for students.

Value Statement/Outcomes

This project launched the WORDE Biopharmaceutical Training Center, creating industry-aligned curriculum, faculty workshops, and a renovated training space with advanced tools. It trained 37 participants, placed students in internships, and attracted interest from women and minorities, establishing a scalable model for workforce development and diversity in biopharma careers.

Outputs/Deliverables

Created and delivered a cell biology course and pilot biopharma training program with textbook and hands-on components.

Expand facility, develop additional curriculum with Merck and MCCC, and strengthen recruitment of women and minorities.

Trained 37 participants (10 K-12 students, 18 higher-ed students, 9 educators); two students secured internships and graduate program offers.

Renovated a dedicated training space and acquired advanced biopharma equipment for hands-on learning.
