NEWARK, Del., August 18, 2026 – The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) is pleased to announce that Dr. Paul Collins has recently joined the Institute as a NIIMBL Senior Fellow. Paul will lead the NIIMBL-led Process Intensification (PI) Program.
“We are very excited to have Paul’s experience and enthusiastic leadership of the PI Program and his perspective in advancing innovation for the industry,” said Kelvin Lee, NIIMBL Institute Director.
NIIMBL-led Programs (Process Intensification, Big Data, Viral Vectors, Preventative Medical Countermeasures) bring together industry stakeholders to envision the future of manufacturing and identify initiatives, projects, and technologies that address key challenges for adoption. These programs are led by individuals with significant industry experience. The PI Program is comprised of five workstreams that seek to invent, design, demonstrate, and support commercialization of integrated and intensified biopharmaceutical manufacturing approaches for the industry.
Meet Paul Collins:
Dr. Collins brings over 30 years of experience from Merck and Eli Lilly, primarily in CMC R&D roles associated with new molecule process development. His career is unique in that he gained significant experience in synthetic small molecules, monoclonal antibodies, therapeutic proteins and other large molecules, as well as with peptides and other genetic medicine-related treatment modalities. Dr. Collins has held several management roles at Lilly and is especially proud of his time leading a new technology development group – a group that grew capabilities in flow chemistry and ultimately commercialized products using continuous manufacturing technology and online analysis for both synthesis and formulation.
Dr. Collins is well known in the broader pharmaceutical development community and is a recognized leader for several FDA-related industry initiatives associated with advanced manufacturing technologies. For the last year, he has worked as a Director of Industrial Research for Purdue University, where he helped create new academic-industrial collaborations in the pharmaceutical space. Dr. Collins has a BE in Chemical Engineering from Vanderbilt University and a PhD in Biochemical Engineering from Northwestern University.
