Industry Need

Industry has disconnected training resources that often overlap resulting in inefficiencies and unreliable outcomes for industry.

Approach

BioTnet (Biomanufacturing Training Network) is a training network made up of private and public Massachusetts-based teaching institutes that offer training resources at all post-secondary education levels. The central idea is shared biomanufacturing workforce development curricula that has direct industry input. This network is intended to act as a scale-down model which can be franchised to different states and/or regions overseen by NIIMBL in a hub-and-spoke type model. In particular, this project addressed the problems of disconnected training resources as well as curriculum development to address training resource gaps.

Impacts

Four Specialized Courses Developed and Delivered: Topics included Bioprocess Data Analytics and Machine Learning, Industrial Lyophilization Training, Viral Vectors for Gene Therapy Manufacturing, and Statistics & Quality Control for Biopharmaceuticals.

Curriculum and Training Materials: Comprehensive course content created and shared with NIIMBL members for continued use and adaptation.

Industry-Validated Framework: Gap analysis and curriculum design informed by industry experts to ensure relevance and applicability.

Phase 2 Expansion Plan: Includes scaling to additional institutions, adding new topics such as vaccine development, and incorporating CEUs for all courses.

Value Statement/Outcomes

This project launched the BioTnet cooperative training network, delivering four specialized courses—Bioprocess Data Analytics, Industrial Lyophilization, Viral Vectors for Gene Therapy, and Statistics for Biopharmaceuticals—training 82 participants with high satisfaction ratings. Shareable curricula, CEUs through MIT, and a Phase 2 expansion plan ensure scalable, industry-aligned training to strengthen workforce readiness in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

Outputs/Deliverables

Four specialized courses created and delivered; one course offered twice during the project period.

All course materials made available to NIIMBL community for future offerings and adaptation.

82 individuals trained (61 professionals, 17 higher-ed students, 4 educators), exceeding initial targets.

Drafted roadmap for scaling BioTnet nationally, adding new topics (e.g., vaccine development), and incorporating hands-on learning and CEUs.
