Industry Need

Development of a single-use disposable plastic device for clarifying cell culture broth from a disposable bioreactor, replacing the currently used centrifuge or depth filters, which get clogged very quickly.

Approach

Compact cell settler has been developed to recycle the settled live and productive cells from its bottom port back to bioreactor to achieve high cell densities in a continuous perfusion bioreactor. Settlers will be fabricated in single-use plastic and demonstrated for large-scale clarification.

Impacts

Clarification of high cell density cultures

Advancement in upstream processing using single-use disposable bioreactors

Eased burden on downstream processing for high cell density cultures

Outputs/Deliverables

Characterization of 24” single use plastic cell settler in cell culture experiments.
